Studio Space for Rent

NNWAC is working with several property owners to secure work space for artists in Wicker Park and Bucktown. Local developers MCM are moving forward in their plans to demolish our old incubator space on Western Avenue. Acme Art Works had provided 12,000 sf, serving more than 38 artists for more than eight years with gallery and work space, darkroom, and film production. The Acme Art Works exhibit and workshop space attracted an audience of 10,000 each year in a year round calendar of events. In a flash, we are so quickly displaced by luxury condos.

NNWAC offers subdivided second floor loft space at 1327 N Milwaukee with studios that range from 300 sf to 1000 sf minimum one year lease. Hardwood floors, high ceilings, central air, utility sink, kitchen and restroom. Visit our flickr page to see photos http://www.flickr.com/photos/acmeartworks/sets/72157604487816747/.

Opportunity: Artists who want short term project space with visibility for public events, workshops, exhibits or lectures. Contact: acmeartworks@gmail.com for details.

A New Venue

NNWAC is working to secure/create/transform a permanent cultural center at St Paul's Church at 2215 W North Avenue between Leavitt and Bell. Take a look at photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/acmeartworks/sets/370292/
We are leaving behind a wind blown Western Avenue and settling into a magical space of authentic stained glass, and carved wood details that recall Norwegian ships.
The lower level will provide flexible community space for exhibits, special events, workshops, film and small scale theater. The sanctuary is up a flight of stairs and is suited for audiences up to 200 for live music, film, theater and special events. NNWAC invites arts organizations to partner as resident organizations to develop a full calendar of events.
The current configuration is not ADA accessible, but planned renovations will make these improvements, when we reach our capital campaign goals.
Volunteer Opportunity: NNWAC welcomes volunteer advisors with professional expertise in historic rehab, construction, marketing, strategic planning and café service.
Teaching Opportunity: Artists who teach workshops. For details contact: acmeartworks@gmail.com

Creative Community Survey

Two hundred fifty six members of the creative community responded to the email invitation extended by NNWAC and Around the Coyote to 3200 people. The Creative Community Study, commissioned by the Wicker Park Bucktown Special Service Area, was produced by the Metro Chicago Info Center, and the report results are now available online: http://wickerparkbucktownssa.org/?p=292

It is an interesting read, but fair warning, it’s 77 pages long. It comes as no surprise to us, that displacement is a major concern. Artists recognize that the uniqueness of the neighborhood is precarious. Respondents urge the protection of rental properties, support racial, social and cultural diversity, desire increased visibility and would participate in a campaign to buy products and services locally.

Wicker Park has functioned as a naturally occuring Arts District for twenty years. Artists laid the foundation creating social value yet have no clear way to reap their full reward. The study gives local artists some hard data to defend their interests in the Wicker Park Bucktown Master Planning process, but they need to find their voice and work collectively. Next Steps? Share your thoughts via email, bring friends and ideas to a public forum scheduled in June. Artists need to participate with local business and begin to describe the solutions. Contact Laura Weathered, Executive Director for further details. laura@nnwac.org

Artisan Cooperative at the Green Exchange

Artists, designers and artisans: Are you interested in building a cooperative storefront business, designed, managed and owned by its shareholders? Is this a logical next step to expand your business without the headache and financial cost doing it on your own? We envision at least 40 members with green products and services, ready to open a 3000 to 6000 sf store located in the proposed Green Exchange building on Diversey. Members would define the business structure, choose the product mix and share operating costs. Members will make the decision to hire professional staff and/or to work as volunteer staff. If interested respond to our survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=Tdvh3e5MM9yW_2bK_2bD5HxfNg_3d_3d.

If there is sufficient interest, we plan to host a planning meeting in a month. Please share this invitation to survey link with colleagues.
